Trauma-Focused and Grief ServicesPresented by Jordan Yates, MA MFT, LAPC This program features services to families and children who have experienced a traumatic event or have experienced severe grief/adjustment that have impaired or interrupted social, behavioral, and/or academic functioning. A majority of the treatment process will be conducted through TF-CBT (Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), an empirically-supported, structured practice for treating trauma in its various forms. Trauma-Focused services apply to any child or family that has been exposed to any type of physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, been a witness to any type of violence in the home or in the community, experienced a natural disaster (i.e. tornado, flood, hurricane), lost of a loved one, exposed to war or terrorism, attacked by an animal or observed an animal attack, as well as severe injuries, car accidents, fires, or medical conditions such as cancer or any other serious medical condition. Ranging anywhere between 12 – 20 weekly sessions, the Trauma-Focused program focuses on impeding and decreasing the symptoms that normally come along with a child’s reaction to traumatic stress that include: delinquent/criminal behavior, suicide risks, risky sexual behavior, substance use/abuse, revictimization, lowered self-esteem, academic difficulties, relationship difficulties, overwhelming anxiety and depression, and medical non-compliance. By the end of treatment, children will have learned more effective coping and communication skills, relaxation and self-soothing skills, and an improved ability to talk about the trauma with their parent or guardian.
